Women In Horror Recognition Month Wrap Up

by Reyna Young
First off I would like to Thank Hannah Neurotica for stirring up the brilliant idea of Women In Horror recognition Month. Not only was it a fun month but for women and men to come together and celebrate females in the horror genre was amazing. The outcome and the support and all of the events that happened really struck me. It made me realize that I have support out there doing what I love to do from all over.
Sure I did run into one guy who thought he was better then the chicks but hell, I’m always going to run into the idiots…

When I first started my Women In horror con I wanted to make it something that would be fun and a great networking time to meet many other females, especially in the bay area. San Francisco doesn’t really have much of horror going on in the bay area and I am trying my best to keep horror alive in the San Francisco area. I had a lot of men and women thank me for doing something like that in San Francisco, they enjoyed the con and want to come to more events. I was very happy with the outcome and with the fantastic guests. I want to thank everyone who came out and supported, I want to thank all of the guests, all of my fans who came out to see me and all of the vendors. I couldn’t do it with out you guys….

I was very happy with the con, the trophy’s, the cake and the love. I met women who came out and were local filmmakers who were very excited to be there and meet other females in the horror genre. I couldn’t stop smiling all day. It was a very hard week for me, my computer crashed, I was stressed out from the con making sure everything would go right, the police department kept calling me and got my number mixed up with someone else’s every time. Saturday was the day that put a smile on my face. I had so much fun that I didn’t want it to stop.

I cannot wait to throw another one next year…..

I would like to Thank Dai Green, Judy Cerda, Jessie Lilley, Val Killmore, Elissa and Leo, Cryptcast podcast, The Graveyard show podcast, damnation books, Horrorzine Magazine, John Gillette, Dylan Walsh, Adam Richardson, Mic The scallywag, The SF Center, Cat Stevens, Johnny Crash, The Slow Poisoner, and to all the wonderful people who came out to support us women who love to get bloody!!!!

Thoughts on Women In Horror film fest

By Andrew Shearer

I started writing this really long, drawn-out story about how the film fest came to be, everything I did to organize it and promote it, all the people who helped and submitted their movies, but then I saw this woman’s review of the show.

What you need to know about me is I’m not a business man. I’m not an advertising genius. I’m not a promoter. I’m shy. I have trouble asking for help. I love low-budget film making, I love horror, and I’ve been called a feminist so many times over the years that I’ve come to accept it as fact. I have several friends who are talented women, they deserve to have their own show, and I can only hope its success will inspire them to keep going (and perhaps inspire someone else to get serious about bringing their own visions to life).

We were pressed for time. The show was too long, and it had an intermission. I bounded down the stairs and made some really quick announcement to the crowd thanking them for not only selling out the show but for supporting women in horror. After all, that’s what this whole thing was about. Each show we do, attendance has been higher and higher. The theater was really happy.

Someone asked me after reading the blog about the show if I wished Gonzoriffic made “serious horror films”. No, I don’t. We make movies that reflect who we are and how we feel. We would be fucking posers if we did anything else. It all comes from a very real place, be it dark or light in tone. Would I rather write and direct a silly movie about sex like “Erotic Couch”? Yes. It was a hell of a lot of fun, challenging in some ways, but significantly rewarding for me. I get tired of everyone assuming all we do is make horror, when the truth is, not much of what we do even falls into that category.

DIY. Punk. Underground. Call it what you want, but don’t try and fit it into a genre. You do that, and you’ve set rules for your art. Rules that may apply on the indie scene, Hollywood or TV, but that have absolutely no meaning here. While I understand that, logically, “Cannibal Sisters 2″ would be the smartest move for us financially (it is our top selling title, just above “Couch” and “Blood Witch”), I will only make it if that’s the movie that comes out of us naturally.

That said, I have a tireless devotion to horror, a lifelong love that is never-ending, and I love it when anyone does anything original with it. I feel all the films I selected and played in this show turn convention on its ear in one way or another, and present a very unique approach that can’t be found anywhere else. It made me happy to bring all of this to an appreciative audience.

Thank you to everyone who did their part to make this a proud night for me. Not only am I glad I did it, but I’m thinking about bringing it to another city and even putting on another in Athens next year. At one point during the promotional radio spot we did the day before the show, the host asked me if there was a prize for the best film.

Check out my answer at 3:10:

If you have been following the evolution of Women in Horror Month than you surely have heard about the Twisted Twins call for a Massive Blood Drive!

Jen & Sylvia Soska write: Horror films have many elements that attract moviegoers into darkened theaters. Two of those elements, that I have always been fond of are the women and the blood. This February we celebrate the first annual Women In Horror Month, brainchild of Hannah Neurotica, the brilliant voice from Ax Wound Magazine and Zinecore Radio. All month long men and women across North American are attending events to honor the ladies we love in the genre we love.

Remember how I mentioned blood and scary above? That’s where the Twisted Twins come in with something we can do to give back in a horror movie style way. We are hosting a massive blood drive. As you may or may not know, every two seconds someone in the United States alone needs blood. But only 5% of the eligible US population donates blood in any given year. Healthy donors are the only source of blood. Currently there is no substitute.

Also, nearly 5 million people rely on blood transfusions each year to live. Without donors, their lives would be lost. Someone you know will need blood. Someone you love will need blood.

Almost everyone can give blood. You MUST feel completely well. You must be between 17 and 61 years of age. If you drink, you CAN donate. If you smoke marijuana, you CAN donate. If you are gay, you CAN donate.

However, you are not eligible if you have traveled outside of the Canada and US, some countries are okay, but you must check in advance, if you have been to the dentist in 2 to 3 days prior to donating, if you have gotten a tattoo or piercing in 6 months prior, or if you have received an injection or FLU SHOT 2 days prior.

It’s kind of scary to have blood taken out of you, but it would be scarier to need blood and for their not to be enough. So, call up your bravest friends– groups of five at a time– and call to make an appointment at 1-888-2-DONATE (366283). Be sure to book early, you have all February long. And record your donation! We want PHOTOS, MESSAGES, and VIDEOS of you giving blood! PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE WHO CAN PROVE THAT THEY BLED FOR WOMEN IN HORROR!!

On a personal note, we found ourselves with family in the hospital multiple times throughout last year and the blood you give makes a huge difference. Thank you for taking part in this event.

AND THEN THEY SHOT THIS INCREDIBLE PSA!!! <———– <——– WATCH IT!

THIS IS WHERE YOU and YOUR BLOOD COME IN!!

This month we are asking you to donate blood. If you can prove that you bled for those in need in honor of WiH Month you will recieve in that thing we call snail mail a pin that reads “I BLED FOR WOMEN IN HORROR 2010″ along with some cool swag from the Twisted Twins sent directly to your mailbox!

Check out these rad pins made by Sage of Sweet Candy Distro:

Make sure to have your picture taken (or video) or if you go at it alone get a sticker that says you donated and take a picture of yourself wearing it! Then email your proof to: WOMENINHORRORMONTH@GMAIL.COM !! Claim your prizes <3

UK National Blood Service

At the end of the month we will post a photo/video/media gallery of all your donations! <3

now go forth and bleed (if you fit into the stupid guidelines of who can & cannot give). Even though they are ludicrous please don’t let that stop you if you CAN from giving to those who need your blood to live. xo

A lot of people have asked me “hey, hannah what are YOU going to do for Women in Horror Month?” I have thought long and hard about this question and finally feel like I can answer. But before I get to that I want to address the issue that made the answering of this question so difficult for me. Even though I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York I no longer live there. Instead I spend my time in a small New England town where connecting with people with similar interests is not so simple and finding venues for events is hard enough let alone finding people to actually show up. After talking to a few people I know I am not alone in this experience. This post is about ways you can celebrate/help expose Women in Horror Month without a big budget or means to host a whole convention or film fest. This is for the people who want to do something but feel stuck in how to go about that. I am obviously only one person with one little brain so these ideas are just what I have come up with while sitting here typing. Please leave a comment with your own awesome idea for how people can help in non-big-event-ways. I will then add your idea to this post!

1. The Twisted Twins (Jen & Sylvia Soska) had a brilliant idea to organize a massive blood drive in honor of Women in Horror Month. Oddly enough my father just had a blood transfusion due to being terminally ill and the issue of giving blood holds even more significance and personal importance that ever before. You don’t need to be in Cananda to do this. One amazing way you can get involved is donate your blood (if your allowed–some of the rules are pretty silly & fucked up but if your able to please do it). The catch is you must prove you did it so have someone take a photo or video of you and send it in to us. We will make sure you get goodies and a pin that reads “I BLED FOR WOMEN IN HORROR 2010.” I will be making an offical WiH Blood drive post with info on who and where you can give blood in different parts of that world. In the meantime

Canada (this link will take you the the Facebook event “Bleed For Women In Horror: Canadian Blood Donation Drive.”

USA

UK

Please feel free to send links to your place of residence and i’ll add the link!

2. Giving blood is not something everyone is allowed to do. It’s pretty fucked up actually that in some countries if your gay you are not eligible. I could go off on a whole fucking rant about that but I will save that for another time– however please look into the rules and fight for your right to bleed! That being said another idea is to hold events in your home/apartment. You don’t need to invite strangers either. Gather together some friends and use one of your homes to show films, have a small horror reading (people can read original horror work or find stories by female horror writers and take turns reading the ones they enjoy or never read before), hang up horror art by women on your walls and invite friends over to look at it…there are many small things you can do with friends in your home that would be fun and all the while take pics/video and show us what you all did!

3. Okay- so you don’t want to host an event PERIOD. That is more then okay. In order for Women in Horror Recogniton Month to grow we need people to help spread the word about its very existence. Right now there are 1000000x female horror fans and only a small number of them know about WiH. Make posts on your website, tell friends, find ways to spread the word. You could even contact local media or people in the horror industry and turn them on to this soon to be revolutionary part of the year. I will be creating a press kit that you can download to help share with people as a starting point. Do you have a favorite magazine? Write them a letter about this feb and tell them what is happening. Don’t worry if someone already contacted them the more people who buzz in the media ear the more we will be heard. Remember this is about RECOGNITION and like women who fought for any given right we were not inherently given we need to BE LOUD and SCREAM for ourselves to get attention. It is not something handed to us. So help in the fight by contacting media outlets OR OR OR telling just ONE new horror fan a day about it even if its a stranger online. Hey, you might make a friend and shit, right? Don’t be shy. I contact strangers all the time and its amazing how many friends of mine now were once people I randomly sent messages to about various projects.

4. MAKE A PEICE OF ART! Make a collage. Make a short video. Make a podcast. Be creative in shedding light on women in the horror industry in any way your creative brain can conceive.

5. Are you sitting on some money and thinking “I sure don’t know what on earth to spend this on?” Help fund an event already being formed or donate to a organization that helps further women in the arts. Then tell us about it!

5. Your turn. What ways can you suggest a person can help participate if they can’t host a big event?

AND TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE HOSTING BIG EVENTS: I want to see pictures and video of all of it as well!! we are going to make a massive multimedia collage of what everyone did big and small. Although nothing you do is “small” everything is helpful and important in making this work. Everything. Also, ya know, if you live in an area where events are happening or are able to travel you can attend one of the events on the Events page. Although, that is obvious so I don’t know why I bother even mentioning it

Okay, now back to the question I started this post with: What am I going to do for Women in Horror Month? Okay, here is my long winded answer:

My father has been terminally ill and as of his birthday/first night of Hanukkah (december 11th) we had to call 911. He has been in the hospital ever since on high level oxygen and morphine. We are now in the hospice/end of life care phase which is incredibly fucking surreal and painful. Its bizzare even that I can sit here and type this but i’ll admit it’s good to have distractions sometimes. For over two years I have been working on a mega insane huge awesome issue of my zine Ax Wound: Gender in the Horror Genre but life has kicked me in the cunt and getting it out has been one of the most difficult tasks imaginable. My original plan was to get it out on Halloween 2009 & of course that didn’t happen and the emotional pain iv been in has made it impossible to focus on anything but wall staring and repetitive facebook ve status updates. I also had plans to launch Ax Wound Radio but for the same reason couldn’t pull that together. As I watch my dad in the hospital: a man who is the reason I love horror so much and who watched and discussed horror movies with me for my whole life I want to make him proud and honor the fact that I have the ability to finish something and right now he doesn’t. That is a really terrifying thought for anyone, especially as an artist/writer which my dad is. My father actually wrote an article for this unreleased issue of Ax Wound and in his honor I am pushing myself to get the issue out by the end of January and one sale February 1st. I will also be launching Ax Wound Radio in the beginning of February and hosting weekly shows with Women in the horror industry coming on for interviews, panel discussions, etc. I don’t know if my dad will make it to February and it is because of HIM that I consider myself an intelligent horror fan. So, in dedication to him and all the people who put so much energy into AW I will be releasing the long awaited zine, the long awaited radio show, and on top of that donating blood with all my friends followed by a small party at my house to show short films by female horror filmmakers. I’d also like to decorate my walls with art by female horror artists and maybe write a short story to read on the radio. This feels do-able since the zine is really done but just needs to be copied and put together and mailed out and the radio shows will be something I can do from my apartment. I will also be mainting this site and contacting media and being a general contact for people before and during the month.

Now… VISIT THE EVENTS PAGE! There are so many awesome events already planned and more to come. It blows my mind. Its a beautiful bloody thing and I am proud to be associated with each and everyone of you. On a different note:

I have been asked by some people who want to hold screenings where they can get some good short female made horror films. The fact that we need to seek this stuff out underground is a big reason this month is necessary. If you make horror films, art, etc please email me if your willing to send screener copies to events around the world!

As we get closer to the end of 2009 it’s time to start really thinking about the first Annual Women in Horror Recognition Month events! Please send in your plans for how you are going to recognize women working in horror for this Feb 2010. I will then be able to start working on the Events page of this website. This is useful because:

1. You might see that someone is planning an event near where you live that you can attend and/or help out with!

2. See where there is major shortages of events and plan some of your own

3. Get inspired by the action of others

etc!

Please leave a comment with your idea: big or small and lets start a list going of events that will be taking place.

SO– WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS FEB 2010!? Here is the list of ideas I have…please contemplate what your able to do and what ideas you might have that I didn’t list (post them so I can add them to this list!)

Host a local film screening BIG OR SMALL! Rent out space for a big event or just have a smaller gathering in your living room with friends, and show movies made by women!

Write a blog post(s) on your blog/website about Women who deserve attention and/or any subject matter revolving around women/horror/recognition

Write to horror magazines about women who aren’t in the pages!

Host a Women Horror Writers Reading at a local bookstore/or in your living room

Host an art show to showcase female horror artists

COME UP WITH YOUR OWN BRILLIANT IDEA AND SHARE IT WITH US!

I also would love for people to document the events once they happen. Send photos/video so I can post it all and we can have a record of the events!

REMEMBER: WOMEN IN HORROR MONTH IS IN EACH OF OUR HANDS. IF YOU ENVISION IT A CERTAIN WAY THEN THAT IS HOW IT WILL BE. IT IS EXECUTED THE WAY YOU CHOOSE. I just want us to all be in support as best we can and help each other out and document the process.

For example, the awesome Nia Edwards-Behi used the banner Mary Goff made for this site, text from the manifesto, and a quote about WiH Month she got from Paul Solet (writer/director of GRACE) to create her own flyer and gave it out at a local film event she helped put on last month. You can create your own flyers/teeshirts/whatever to help spread the word with your own art, quotes, etc. It’s all about having fucking fun and bringing attention to women in the horror industry who work damn hard and deserve some fucking bloody love! xo If you do anything like that i’d love to get a copy and put it up on the site to share with everyone!

NOW: LEAVE COMMENTS ON YOUR THOUGHTS/PLANS/IDEAS/QUESTIONS!
